Opening of temporary exhibition

2023-09-14

On September 14, 2023, the temporary exposition "Walks in the Old Town" timed to coincide with the Day of National Unity was opened in the Information Hall of the Northern Building of the Mir Castle.

The exposition presents 79 postcards with views of the cities of Grodno, Lida, Novogrudok, Slonim in the period of 1900–1930s from the funds of the Grodno State Museum of the History of Religion and the Mir Castle Complex Museum.
A hundred years ago, the postcard, almost forgotten in our time, was the main means of communication at a distance. And view photo postcards for memory or as an invitation to travel were very popular.

Of the postcards presented in the temporary exhibition, the oldest dates back to 1895–1904. It depicts the Military Club in Grodno, which was located in the New Castle. Also, visitors will be able to see postcards published in the Russian Empire, Germany, the Polish Republic in 1900–1930. The footage captured the real atmosphere of a provincial town of the early 20th century: a general view of the streets and squares with citizens walking along them, the bank and post office buildings, the railway station, ancient castles and temples, some of which have now been lost. A separate block presents postcards made in Grodno by the occupying troops, reflecting the city during the First World War.
The exposition is of interest to connoisseurs of the history of their country, anyone interested in its past, as well as philatelists and philocartists. It is these old postcards that help to recreate the former appearance of cities, to compile archaeological maps for the preservation of architectural and archaeological monuments and the study of the historical topography of Belarusian cities.

The temporary exhibition "Walks in the Old City" will remain open until October 12, 2023.

Free admission.
